The citation network maps closely to the global integrated energy and chemicals sector. Beyond ExxonMobil’s own filings, the largest citation volumes involve Chevron, Shell, Dow, BP, ConocoPhillips, Honeywell, BASF, IFP Energies Nouvelles, and Mitsui Chemicals, alongside state-affiliated research entities in China and Saudi Arabia, reflecting the significant role of national oil company research programmes in this field.

Patent Filing Activity by Publication/Issue Year

Ownership and Acquisition
Ownership Type
  • Acquired Patents: 2,454
  • Originally Assigned Patents: 93,891
Sources of Acquired Patents
  • Operating Companies: 1,340
  • Other Sources: 359
  • Universities: 31

ExxonMobil’s patent portfolio consists of 93,891 originally assigned patents and 2,454 acquired patents, meaning approximately 97% of the portfolio was developed internally. This reflects a research model built around large in-house corporate laboratories rather than technology acquisition, notable given that the company’s largest corporate transactions have been resource acquisitions valued in the tens of billions of dollars.

Notable Acquisitions and M&A
2024 – Pioneer Natural Resources (~US$60 billion)

ExxonMobil completed its acquisition of Pioneer Natural Resources in May 2024 in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately US$60 billion, the largest deal in the company’s modern history. The acquisition roughly doubled its Permian Basin footprint and underpins the planned production growth of approximately 9% compound annual growth rate through 2030. The transaction was primarily a resource and acreage acquisition rather than a technology purchase, which is why it contributes relatively little to the acquired-patent count.

2023 – Denbury (~US$4.9 billion)

ExxonMobil acquired Denbury Inc. in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately US$4.9 billion, securing the largest owned and operated carbon dioxide pipeline network in the United States. The acquisition supports the Low Carbon Solutions business and its carbon capture and storage offering for industrial customers.

2026 – Corporate reorganisation

Following a corporate reorganisation and relocation of its state of incorporation to Texas, the listed parent entity now reports as ExxonMobil Holdings Corporation, continuing to trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker XOM.

Business Performance

ExxonMobil is one of the largest publicly traded integrated energy and chemicals companies in the world, listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker XOM. It operates through Upstream, Product Solutions, and Low Carbon Solutions segments, and is the largest refiner outside China.

  • FY 2025: earnings of US$28.84 billion (US$6.70 per share), compared with US$33.68 billion (US$7.84 per share) in 2024; earnings excluding identified items of US$30.11 billion.
  • Q2 2026: earnings of US$14.5 billion (US$3.48 per share); adjusted earnings of US$14.7 billion (US$3.52 per share); cash flow from operating activities of US$23.6 billion; free cash flow of US$17.2 billion; cash capital expenditure of US$6.8 billion.
  • First-half 2026 earnings: US$18.7 billion, up approximately 4% on US$14.8 billion in the first half of 2025, achieved despite an approximately 10% temporary loss of upstream production linked to Middle East supply disruption.
  • Shareholder distributions (Q2 2026): US$9.4 billion, comprising US$4.3 billion of dividends and US$5.1 billion of share repurchases; a third-quarter dividend of US$1.03 per share was declared, payable 10 September 2026.
  • Upstream: record Permian Basin production consistent with a planned 9% compound annual growth rate through 2030, and the highest overall upstream output in more than two decades excluding Middle East disruption. The fifth Guyana floating production vessel set sail with startup on plan for the fourth quarter of 2026, adding 250,000 barrels per day of capacity.
  • Guyana milestone: ExxonMobil has recovered its full US$55 billion investment in Guyana approximately two years ahead of schedule, with free cash flow from the development projected to roughly double by 2030 relative to 2025.
  • Refining: US Gulf Coast reliability exceeded 95% in the quarter, with record distillate production amid roughly three million barrels per day of global refining capacity offline.
  • Cost performance: cumulative structural cost savings of US$16.3 billion since 2019.
