Venturing into the Metaverse: The Confluence of Live Broadcasting, Gaming and Modern Entertainment 

The metaverse is an integration of virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality which enables immersive engagement across live streaming, gaming, and entertainment. 

Introduction 

The landscape of entertainment has changed dramatically over the last few decades. The advent of the Internet in the early 1990’s led to a novel trajectory for broadcasting, gaming and the entertainment industry. The live streaming of games which has become an integral part of our lives was not possible before the emergence of internet. Gaming, which was earlier reliant on large systems like arcades and consoles, shifted to mobile gaming which increased the user base as it became more accessible. The entertainment industry evolved dramatically over the years as streaming platforms like YouTube and Netflix came into picture and democratized the content available to the viewers.

From Radio to VR: Live Broadcasting’s Journey 

The transformation of global communication started with the onset of radio in the early 20th century which enabled widespread distribution of news, sports and entertainment content. This led to the foundation of broadcasting technology as we know it today. It was followed by the introduction of television in the 1920s, which brought visual streaming to the forefront of broadcasting. The introduction of color television in the 1950s enhanced the viewing experience of the public which was further enhanced by bringing HD and later 4K and 8K UHD. 

Emergence of Live Streaming  

Live streaming started in the early 1990s with the advent of the Internet. The first known instance of live streaming happened in 1993 when a music band Severe Tire Damage live-streamed their performance over the internet. In 1995, RealPlayer media player was released by RealNetworks which was able to live stream audio and later video and was easier to access for the public. Live sports were brought to our computer screens when RealPlayer broadcasted a live baseball game. 

Surge of Live Streaming 

The live streaming industry changed drastically with the invention of Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) which altered the way in which we stream data. The data was streamed according to the geographical location of the user using this system of distributed servers (CDNs). This reduces the load time, increases the efficiency and the reliability of the streamed web content. 

Live streaming has boomed because of its expansion to media platforms like YouTube Live, Facebook Live, Instagram Live, X (formerly Twitter) Live, and Twitch. Anyone with access to a mobile phone and internet connection could create and stream content globally irrespective of their geographic location, race, color and the section of the society they belong to.  

Next Era of Live Streaming 

The integration of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) with live streaming is something to look out for. Imagine being able to watch a football match or a music concert live from your couch and still be able to interact with the avatars of fellow fans, players or artists in the virtual world. Metaverse concerts provide fans with a 360-degree view of the stage surrounded by the energy of the crowd. Features like AI enabled chat bots, real-time quizzes, captions and translation can be included in live streams for better viewer experience. Metaverse enables gatherings across geographical boundaries, where fans from across the globe can congregate in virtual spaces. Platforms like Fortnite and Roblox are already providing services like virtual concerts with artists like Twenty-One Pilots and Travis Scott.

From Arcades to VR: Gaming’s Technological Journey 

The initial game machine was launched in 1940 at the New York World’s Fair which was inspired by the ancient game of Nim. Nolan Bushnell, the founder of Atari, also known as the godfather of gaming, launched Pong which was the first real electronic video game in 1973. With the arrival of personal computers in the early 1970s home gaming became a reality and led to the inception of multiplayer human to human combat shooter game Gunfight in 1975.

Transition to Online Gaming 

The CVC GameLine by Atari in 1982, allowed users to download games and software using the traditional telephone line, which led to the groundwork of online gaming. The advent of the Internet led to the transformation of the gaming industry, and affordable and convenient availability of games to the public.  

Popular video game consoles like the Sega Saturn, the Sony PlayStation, and the Nintendo 64 were amongst the popular ones during their times. Who does not remember playing Super Mario or Tetris or Call of Duty or Resident Evil, which became a part of the everyday life of people across the world. Gaming consoles intrigued and united the world like no other in the 90s and early 2000s which led to their proliferation. 

Inception of Mobile Gaming 

The migration towards mobile gaming expanded the demographic including Southeast Asia, which led to its inclusion in media publications like magazines, newspapers, the Internet and social media. With mobile phones becoming highly popular and accessible, basic games like Snake (400 million Nokia devices) and Angry Bird (revenue of $200 million to Rovio) were amongst the trendiest ones. Although mobile gaming has over-powered the hand-held gaming industry, the console industry still grows. With the addition of virtual reality and artificial intelligence in the gaming industry, the technology involved would be very helpful to enhance the gaming experience of the players.

Gaming’s Metaverse Integration 

The arrival of a new console named Oculus (now owned by Facebook) in late 2020, and its increasing sales volume led to the uptake of VR as a gaming medium. Today’s gaming relies majorly on the physical devices used and are constrained by their strengths and weaknesses. The shift towards cloud-based gaming reduces the reliance of gamers on the hardware used. The gameplay is processed at data centers and streamed to the user via content delivery networks (CDNs).  

Currently platforms like Microsoft’s cloud gaming platform, xCloud are used to distribute existing games developed for PCs or consoles to cloud. Since, processing of gameplay is executed remotely (not on the hardware), the game launch is quick, which generally takes around hours to copy downloads to the console. The next logical move from cloud gaming is to cloud-native games which can be played only within a cloud infrastructure.  

The invention in content creation is currently driven by user generated content (UGC), which is the content created and published by users. Earlier the content was created by developers, but with increasing number of gamers worldwide the need for developers is increasing, which can be resolved using UGC. Roblox is an online platform that allows players to create and share their own game assets, such as characters or even an entire game using Roblox’s development tools. The platform has a community of about 150 million active monthly users. 

The most popular games of recent times are community-focused, be it Pokémon GO or Fortnite. These games are designed based on the hardware the players own, but these games are constrained by server restrictions. A live virtual space will provide all the users with a gaming experience that includes a sense of presence, social experiences and a virtual economy. The integration of cloud gaming, UGC, AI, and social gaming will lead to the creation of hyper-personalized gaming experience for the players.

Transformation of Entertainment: Embracing the Metaverse  

The growth of entertainment has seen a remarkable transition over the years. It started with the advent of silent films in the early 20th century which used visual storytelling to captivate audiences. It further paved the way for the golden age of television in the mid-20th century, which revolutionized home entertainment. The transition to color television from black-and-white television was a step ahead to enhance viewer experience. With the increase in sales volume of satellite and cable television sets in the late 20th century, there was a change in the viewing options available to the user like systematic and specialized channels to meet specific needs of the user. 

In the late 20th century and early 21st century, digital revolution transformed the visual entertainment that we see today as VHS tapes were replaced by DVDs. The music industry was also impacted from the same, as vinyl records were transitioned to CDs which ultimately changed to streaming services. With streaming services coming into the picture, the way we consume music changed altogether. Gone were the days when we must download a song into our device to listen to it, which restricted the listeners according to the storage they had available. Now the listeners can listen to any available song on any platform by streaming it.  

The era of the internet led to the shift of entertainment industry to on-demand content through platforms like YouTube, Netflix, and Prime which made users have unrestricted control over the kind of content they desire to watch. The kind of content available also changed and is more democratized as the content creators are no longer bound by a geographical boundary.  

Multisensory Storytelling in Theatres 

Nowadays information is no longer presented using voice only, visuals like images or videos are used. Perceiving this data using images, graphs and charts helps us to easily process the information. These visuals can be made more interactive and can be used as a hologram for better and easier understanding.  

Theatres are one source of entertainment that earlier tapped only the audio and visual sensor of the viewer. These days theatres tap into the sense of smell too, where the line between the actors, props and the audience are blurred. The viewers can now interact with the performance space and engage in it too. Old buildings like schools or abandoned warehouses are used as a stage, where different parts of the play are being simultaneously performed and the viewer can decide which part of the play to keep up with. The combination of theatre, dance, and art installations together make it a unique experience for everyone according to the path the viewer adheres to.  

Punchdrunk Theatre is one of the pioneering companies to come up with this idea to make theatre an interactive and engaging experience for everyone involved. They use abandoned buildings like schools and hospitals or custom-built sets and transform them into stages and allow the spectators to wander around the set and create a narrative according to the multiple perspectives they experience. One of their most notable works of art is the play ‘Sleep No More’ which is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s most brilliant work, ‘Macbeth’. The viewers can visit all the rooms, dive into art installations and live through this dreadful story.

Storytelling in Virtual Spaces 

Storytelling can be altered with the use of augmented reality and virtual reality which can redefine how we as audiences consume and craft entertainment. Imagine artists, content creators, and viewers working together to make a universe with no intermediaries. The creators and artists will have direct ownership of their work using Blockchain technology. Web3 is one such platform which transforms the internet with decentralization and blockchain, which enhances security, privacy, and transparency thereby reducing the dependence on intermediaries. 

Storytelling using virtual reality creates a world where the lines between the artists and viewers get blurred. Augmented reality can be used in museums and parks where reality overlaps with the virtual world. Imagine visiting a theme park where all the creatures and scenarios come to life and create a world in which the audience too becomes a part of the story.  

Sensory experiences alter the way we perceive art as compared to traditional theatre or art displays. AR and Haptics allow people to experience and engage with the same space. Suppose there’s a fire in the video, then the audience could also feel the heat thereby enhancing the viewer experience. The users could also decide the storyline they like to follow; while watching a movie using VR headsets the viewer can select which way the story goes.

Immersion of AI in Beauty Pageants 

Kenza Layli, an artificial intelligence (AI) influencer from Morocco has been crowned as the world’s first ‘Miss AI’. Who would have imagined that there would be a day when you’ll read such a headline, but we all did read it on July 16, 2024. AI generated contestants were judged in the first installment of a program of awards presented by the World AI Creator Awards. The judges panel included other AI generated creators, pageantry historians and marketing guru who considered looks, answers and poise of the contestants.  

Conclusion 

The evolution of live streaming is so vivid that sometimes it seems implausible that the once radio listeners could now live stream a game or a concert in real-time. Technological advancements like high-speed internet (5G and beyond), virtual reality, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence, have revolutionized how content is created and consumed. Live broadcasting has shifted beyond the traditional radio and television to incorporate streaming platforms that provide real-time interaction between content creators and audiences. Goldman Sachs, in an April report, outlined the creator economy, estimating its value at $250 billion, with projections indicating it could approach half a trillion dollars by 2027. Gaming has also evolved as a socially connected entertainment medium with esports becoming mainstream. The entertainment industry has embraced these technologies which led to new forms of storytelling and audience engagement. As these technologies continue to advance and integrate into each other, the lines between live broadcasting, gaming, and entertainment are getting blurred and new possibilities for creativity and connection are crafted.
